Puppies with injuries and atrophied limbs locked in cramped and tiny cages. This is how Humane Society International (HSI) found about 200 dogs locked up on a Hongseong farm in South Korea. All of them were destined for slaughter, but luckily the volunteers managed to rescue them.

Wounds not healed, piled on top of each other without the possibility of moving in cages kept outside even in cold temperatures. All this took place in a sort of Korean farm about 150 kilometers south of the capital Seoul, transformed into a breeding farm for puppies, some destined for slaughter, others to be sold as pets.

A situation that had been going on for eight years now and that until now had never been changed. HSI, an animal charity that has been fighting for the rights of four-legged friends for years, saved 200 dogs including chihuahuas, French bulldogs, Yorkshire terriers, poodles and mestizos.

Thus not only were the dogs saved from an ignoble end, but the farm was finally closed, thus preventing other innocent victims from falling into the hands of unscrupulous breeders. We are talking about dogs that had never known freedom, that had never run happily in the grass.

They lived in iron cages resting on concrete, exposed to lamps and never seeing the sunlight. In short, slaughter meat waiting to be served in local restaurants. The operation began on February 13 and now the dogs will be transferred to the United States and Canada pending adoption. This story has a beautiful happy ending, but around a million dogs are eaten every year in South Korea. An indignant tradition, but which unfortunately continues to exist.

"These dogs are no different from others, they need some loving care now," Kelly O'Meara, an HSI official, told AFP.

This farm is the 14th closed since 2015 for the exact same reasons.
