In the future we will have the opportunity to use washing machines that can function according to the principles of environmental sustainability? At the moment, the projects for washing machines able to guarantee a certain saving of water, electricity and detergents are numerous, but they continue to remain outside the circuits of large-scale production.

The models that we propose below are not yet marketed commercialized. These are prototypes that nevertheless seem to open up new horizons on the ecological laundry front.

Here 10 projects for ecological washing machines to be discovered.

Orbit by Electrolux: washes without water

10 prototypes of ecological washing machines to save water and energy

Orbit is a washing machine prototype designed by Electrolux capable of washing fabrics without using water. Water is replaced by carbon dioxide (dry ice), which at a certain temperature is able to carry out its task of cleaning clothes, even taking advantage of the speed of the device itself. At the moment Orbit is only a prototype and we don't know if it will ever be commercialized.

Spinner

Giradora is one pedal washing machine which does not require electric current for its own functioning. It uses a quantity of water that can be compared to that used for the hand washing. It was designed to facilitate the execution of the laundry in developing countries, with particular reference to those areas where access to the electricity grid is absent. It could also be a good solution in camping, in an ecovillage, in a studio flat or inside a home where attention is paid to energy saving. The price of Giradora is dollars 40, corresponding to around 30 euros. At the moment, however, it is not yet available for sale.

EcoDual

10 prototypes of ecological washing machines to save water and energy

EcoDual is a washing machine model created by the designer Max Germano. The aim is to reduce water consumption by 50% during washing. Its prototype was designed with the presence of two compartments with a capacity of 6 kilos and 2 kilos respectively. The smaller compartment is suitable for washing delicates. The water used from time to time is collected and filtered so that it can be used again for subsequent washes.

Swirl

10 prototypes of ecological washing machines to save water and energy

The model of the washing machine Swirl was created to be adapted to places where water and electricity are not easily accessible. Swirl works without the need for electricity. At the time of washing, it can be filled with clothes and transported, thanks to its particular shape, to a source where water can be drawn. Once the water has been added, it will be transported back and in the meantime the washing will be carried out, thanks to simple mechanical movements. Even using it as a game ball. When not used as a washing machine, it can be used for the simple transport of water or as a laundry basket.

No-soap

10 prototypes of ecological washing machines to save water and energy

No-soap is a washing machine prototype designed by dand Jung Hyun Cho e Bo Ram for Electrolux. This washing machine does not use soap or any other type of detergent to do the laundry. To ensure the cleanliness of the laundry, it uses ahigh pressure water and disinfects the fabrics using an ultraviolet sterilizer. No-soap is so fast that it can complete each wash cycle in one minute.

Washit

10 prototypes of ecological washing machines to save water and energy

Washit is a concept that aims to remedy the waste of water that occurs during the shower conceived by a group of 4 Turkish university students. It is a system for collecting gray water dispersed during the shower that can be used for laundry in the washing machine.Washit was presented as part of a school project, but now their innovative idea could be taken very seriously. having obtained aspecial award on the occasion of iF Concept Design Award 2012, as part of the water saving.

Re-cycle

10 prototypes of ecological washing machines to save water and energy

The re-cycle washing machine has been designed to reduce the use of water when washing clothes. The water used for each load of laundry is not wasted, but recycled and then reused for the next wash. This washing machine could be useful in the future not only to save water, but also space and energy. In fact, for its movements it exploits the force of gravity.

SquashWash

10 prototypes of ecological washing machines to save water and energy

SquashWash is an alternative washing machine model, designed by designer Kristin Muller, in order to save both water and energy while washing. For its functioning, SquashWash imitates the structure of a common salad spinner. Those who will use it will simply have to fill it with clothes and water and exert pressure on its lid with their hands or using it as a stool.

Airwash

The project for the washing machine of the future AirWash was made by the designers Gabriel Tane e Wendy Chua. Will we ever be able to see it appear in our homes by 2020? AirWash uses negative ions and compressed air for washing and disinfecting clothes. Its conception was inspired by the image of a waterfall, although for its operation the use of water is not foreseen.

WashUp

10 prototypes of ecological washing machines to save water and energy

Have you ever thought that a large appliance such as a washing machine could cto combine easily with a toilet? So here is a hybrid device, conceived by Sevin Coskun, which could allow in the future to use the gray water coming from washing clothes in the washing machine for the functioning of the toilet drain, so as to be able to avoid any type of water waste.

Which one convinces you the most?
