Reds 5, Cubs 4

By Chris Rewers on Friday, May 6, 2011

Heroes: Sean Marshall (0.64 ERA) and Kerry Wood (1.50) combined for 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief. They allowed one hit, struck out two, and walked none.

Cubs relievers have not allowed a run in their last 17 2/3 innings over nine games.

Goat: Matt Garza (1-4) struck out seven and walked two while allowing five runs - all earned - on six hits in six innings.

Key Play:Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer off Garza in the fourth to give the Reds a 3-1 lead.

Comments:The Cubs struggles' with runners in scoring position continued against a a very wild Edinson Volquez (3-1).They went 2-for-12 in such situations Friday. They stranded runners in scoring position in innings 2-6. The Cubs (14-17) rank second in the National League with a .269 average but are 15th in BA with RISP.... The Cubs caught a tough break in the bottom of the ninth after Kosuke Fukudome (0-for-4) led off with a walk. A Darwin Barney liner was somehow snared by Francisco Cordero and the Cincinnati closer easily doubled Fukudome off first. ... The Cubs have been outhomered at Wrigley Field this season 18-9.... Mr. April Fukudome is two for his last 25 since his five-hit game against Colorado on April 25. ... Starlin Castro (1-for-5) is just two for his last 21.

Next: Casey Coleman (1-2, 7.36 ERA) gets the starting assignment for the Cubs on Saturday (Fox,12:10 p.m.) and he'll oppose Cincinnati veteran right-hander Bronson Arroyo (3-3, 4.17).
