Padres 5, Cubs 4 (Game 2)

By Chris Rewers on Thursday, April 21, 2011

Hero: Reed Johnson, who replaced center fielder Marlon Byrd in the starting lineup, went 3-for-4 with a double.

Goat: James Russell (1-2, 8.00 ERA) may have pitched his way out of the Cubs' starting rotation after allowing four runs - all earned on seven hits while walking one and striking out none. Russell served up home runs to Ryan Ludwick, Cameron Maybin, and Chris Denorfia.

Key Play: Ludwick's two-run homer off Russell in the second inning snapped a scoreless tie and put the Padres ahead to stay.

Comments: Alfonso Soriano hit his sixth home run of the season with a man on in the eighth. ... Catcher Geovany Soto threw out three potential San Diego base stealers.

Next: After an off day Thursday, the Cubs open a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field on Friday (WGN, 1:20 p.m.).
