Hero: Alfonso Soriano (2-for-4) wrapped up a terrific April with a solo home run in the second inning and an RBI single in the fourth. It was the 10th homer of the season for Soriano (.258 BA, 20 RBI), who shares the major league lead in home runs with Milwaukee's Ryan Braun.
Goat: Kosuke Fukudome, who came to Arizona on a roll, went 0-for-5 to drop his average to .383. Fukudome is just 1-for-12 in the current series.
Key Play: Darwin Barney's two-out single through the box in the ninth on a 2-and-2 pitch from Arizona reliever J.J.Putz knocked in Geovany Soto from third with the go-ahead run. Barney, who went 2-for-5 to raise his average to .326, pumped his fist as he charged up the line.
"Money hitting right there," Cubs TV analyst Bob Brenly said. "Barney loves to be the man at the plate when the game's on the line. That time he came through in a big way."
All five of the Cubs' runs were scored with two outs.
Comment: Matt Garza (1-3) worked eight strong innings, allowing three runs - all earned - on six hits while striking out 10 and walking two to earn his first National League win. ... Carlos Marmol pitched a hitless ninth to claim his seventh save in nine opportunities. .., Mike Quade was ejected in the top of the ninth for arguing a call at second base that went against the Cubs.
Next: The Cubs (12-14) will aim for their season-high third straight victory Sunday (WGN, 3:10 p.m.) when they send Casey Coleman (1-1, 7.43 ERA) against Arizona right-hander Daniel Hudson (1-4, 5.64). Hudson has allowed at least one first inning run in each of his five starts.
