Cubs 2, Padres 1 (Game 1, 11 innings)

By Chris Rewers on Thursday, April 21, 2011

Hero: Matt Garza - who did not figure in the decision - allowed six hits, struck out nine, and walked three over six shutout innings. Garza walked the first two men he faced in the sixth but escaped a bases-loaded-jam when Brad Hawpe rolled into an inning-ending double play.

"If I don't win a game all year but we win my games, it doesn't bother me one bit," Garza said.

Goat: Carlos Marmol squandered his second save opportunity of the season. Marmol was protecting a 1-0 lead in the top of the ninth when he issued a one-out walk to Cameron Maybin. The speedy Maybin stole second, advanced to third on a bunt single by Will Venable, and scored on a Jason Bartlett sacrifice fly.

Key Play: Reed Johnson led off the bottom of the 11th with a home run to end the 3-hour, 59-minute contest and give the Cubs their second straight extra-inning win over the Padres. Johnson's game-winning clout came on a 1-and-1 pitch from Park Ridge native Luke Gregerson (0-1).

Comments: The game time temperature was 42 degrees. ... The Cubs scored their other run in the third when Marlon Byrd's single scored Garza from third base. The run was unearned because of a two-out fielding error by shortstop Bartlett. ... Garza, who reached on a fielder's choice, went 0-for-2 and is 0-for-20 in his career. ... Left fielder Alfonso Soriano nailed Bartlett at second base in the fifth inning when the San Diego baserunner attempted to stretch a gap hit into a double. ... Padres starter Dustin Moseley (6 IP, 5 H, 4 SO, BB) lowered his ERA to 1.40. The Padres' ninth-inning run was the first one they scored in Moseley's four starts this season. ... San Diego stranded 16 baserunners and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. The Padres left the bases loaded in the sixth, seventh, and 11th.
