Brewers 6, Cubs 5

By Chris Rewers on Sunday, April 10, 2011

Hero: Aramis Ramirez (3-for-5, 3 RBI) doubled three times off Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo. Six of the Cubs' 11 hits Sunday were doubles.

Goat: Fomer Cub Casey McGehee, who was just 4-for-22 on Milwaukee's seven game homestand, capped a disastrous bottom of the eighth with a pinch-hit, two-run, two-out, opposite-field, go-ahead homer off Kerry Wood (0-1).

Key Play: With the Cubs clinging to a one-run lead in the bottom of the eighth, Wood walked leadoff hitter Yuniesky Betancourt.

"That's a prime example of why you can't walk guys late in the game," Wood said. "Home runs happen. You tip your hat when guys take a pitch like that and hit it out the other way. You can't walk guys late in the game, and that's why."

Comments: Prince Fielder (his fourth extra-base hit on a two-strike count in the last two games) and Ryan Braun each hit game-tying two-run homers off Cubs starter Casey Coleman (5 IP, 9 H, BB, 2 SO). ... Right fielder Kosuke Fukudome exited the game in the fifth inning after suffering a mild hamstring strain while making a shoestring catch. ... It was the eighth game for the Cubs (4-5) this season that was decided by three runs or less. ... The Cubs stranded nine baserunners and were 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

"We're not giving ourselves much room for error," Cubs manager Mike Quade said. "What is it, seven, eight, nine straight tight ballgames? You need to add on when you can. When you have a guy like Gallardo on the ropes, you need to put him away. We had plenty of chances."

Next: Ryan Dempster (0-2, 6.59 ERA) will try to rebound from a disappointing opening homestand Monday (CSN+, 7:05 p.m.) when the Cubs open a three-game series in Houston (2-7). Nelson Figueroa (0-1, 10.13 ERA), who won both of his starts against the Cubs last season, will get the start for the Astros.
