Astros 4, Cubs 0

By Chris Rewers on Sunday, October 3, 2010

Heroes: Thomas Diamond, Marcos Mateo, and Sean Marshall combined for two scoreless and hitless innings as Cubs relievers closed the season with 28 straight shutout innings. The bullpen posted a 1.19 ERA in its final 25 games.

Goat: Ryan Dempster (15-12) allowed four runs - three earned - on nine hits while striking out seven and walking one. It was Dempster's first road loss since July 30.

Key Play: Tommy Manzella's two-out RBI bloop single to center in the second inning plated the game's first run and gave Houston starter Nelson Figueroa (7-4) and three relievers all the offense they would need.

Comments: The Cubs (75-87) finished fifth in the National League Central, but were 24-13 overall and 17-5 in road games under interim manager Mike Quade.

Darwin Barney, Xavier Nady, and Alfonso Soriano each had two hits, the only hits by the Cubs who lost for the 15th time in 29 shutout games this season.

Next: The Cubs will open their 136th National League season on April 1, 2011 (1:20 p.m.) against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field.
