Cubs 2, Marlins 0

By Chris Rewers on Friday, September 17, 2010

Hero: Ryan Dempster (14-10) allowed just four hits - singles by Gaby Sanchez and Dan Uggla, and doubles by Chad Tracy and Logan Morrison - over seven innings while striking out five and walking three. Dempster and three relievers combined for the Cubs' 10th shutout of the season and the third of the current road trip.

Goat: Starlin Castro went 0-for-4 and committed his 26th error of the season when he booted a Mike Stanton grounder in the seventh inning. Castro is second in the majors in errors, regardless of position, trailing only Washington rookie shortstop Ian Desmond (33).

It should also be noted that Castro made a spectacular diving catch in shallow left field on a Morrison looper in the ninth inning to save a run and end the game.

Key Play: After Carlos Marmol walked the first two hitters in the bottom of the ninth, Scott Cousins swung at the first pitch and weakly flied out to Marlon Byrd in shallow center field. Marmol then retired the next two batters to nail down his 32nd save of the season.

Comments: The Cubs improved to 6-1 on the current road trip and have allowed just eight runs in those seven games.

The Marlins were 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 runners on base Friday.

Alfonso Soriano (2-for-4), who had an RBI double in the second inning, had just his third multi-hit performance in his last 21 games.

Next: Casey Coleman (1-2, 5.11 ERA) will start for the Cubs (66-81) on Saturday (WGN, 6:10 p.m.) and face Florida (73-73) right-hander Anibal Sanchez (12-9, 3.35).
