Rockies 8, Cubs 7

By Chris Rewers on Sunday, August 1, 2010

Hero: Marlon Byrd went 3-for-5 with a two-run triple in the ninth inning. Byrd's .315 average if the best on the Cubs and ranks fifth in the National League.

Goat: A rusty Carlos Zambrano allowed two runs - both earned - on four hits in two innings of relief. Zambrano struck out one and walked two.

Key Play: With the Cubs trailing 8-6 and Byrd on third with one out in the ninth, Colorado center fielder Dexter Fowler leaped and reached over the fence to pull in an Alfonso Soriano drive, saving a game-tying homer. Fowler left the game with a bruised left hip and ribs.

Comments: Blake DeWitt had an RBI double in his first at-bat in the second inning and went 3-for-4 in his Cubs debut.

Carlos Silva (10-5) exited the game after facing just four batters because of an irregular heartbeat. Silva was scheduled to remain overnight in a Denver hospital for evaluation.

The Cubs (46-59), who lost their season-high fifth straight game and fell a season-high 13 games below .500, lead the NL with 24 one-run losses and 37 one-run games.

Next: The Cubs send Randy Wells (5-8, 4.10 ERA) to the mound on Monday (WCIU, 7:05 p.m.) when they open a six-game homestand, against the Milwaukee Brewers (48-58).

Right-handed ace Yovani Gallardo (9-5, 2.77) will start for Milwaukee. Gallardo, who is making his third start since he was activated from the disabled list July 22 (he was out 18 days) matched his shortest big league start in his last outing, against Cincinnati on Tuesday. He allowed five earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. Gallardo didn't figure in the decision but was impressive in his previous start against the Cubs on June 8. He worked seven shutout innings and allowed just four hits. He struck out seven and walked two. Gallardo is 1-1 with a 4.30 ERA in five career starts against the Cubs and is 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in three career starts at Wrigley Field.
