Giants 5, Cubs 4

By Chris Rewers on Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Hero: Tyler Colvin went 2-for-5 and hit a solo homer in the seventh inning that tied the game at 4.

Goat: Tom Gorzelanny allowed four runs - all earned - on eight hits in six innings. Gorzelanny struck out five and walked one. The left-hander surrendered three runs in the first inning and gave up a homer to Aaron Rowand in the sixth.

Key Play: Pat Burrell led off the bottom of the eighth with a tie-breaking homer off Justin Berg (0-1).

Comments: The Cubs traded Mike Fontenot, their Opening Day second baseman, to the Giants before the game in exchange for minor-league outfielder Evan Crawford. The Cubs are expected to call up infielder Darwin Barney from Triple-A Iowa to fill Fontenot's roster spot. ... Welington Castillo became the 14th rookie to appear in a game this season for the Cubs (48-66).

Next: Randy Wells (5-10, 4.37) will try to help the Cubs earn a series split Thursday (WGN, 2:45 p.m.) when he opposes San Francisco (65-50) right-hander Matt Cain (9-9, 3.06).

Wells, who has lost his last three decisions, has allowed three or fewer runs in seven of his last nine starts.

Cain allowed six runs in five innings his last time out, against Atlanta, as he suffered his first loss since the All-Star break. He is 5-2 with a 2.41 ERA in eight career starts against the Cubs.
