Cubs 8, Giants 6

By Chris Rewers on Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Hero:Starlin Castro went 2-for-5 and knocked in three runs.

Goat: Tyler Colvin, who was making his 11th start in center field this season, dropped a two-out fly ball by Buster Posey on the warning track in left-center that enabled San Francisco to score two runs. It was scored a double.

Key Play: Kosuke Fukudome smacked a two-run homer that splashed into the bay beyond the right-field fence off Giants ace Tim Lincecum (11-6) to cap a four-run first inning. It was the 10th home run of the season for Fukudome who was making just his fifth start since the all-Star break.

Comments: It was just the third victory for the Cubs (48-65) in their last 15 games. It was Alan Trammell's first win in five games as acting manager. Lou Piniella is expected to rejoin the Cubs in St. Louis on Friday, Trammell said.

Aramis Ramirez was doubled off first to end the fifth inning thanks to some terrible and inexcusable baserunning. Alfonso Soriano hit a routine fly ball to Giants righnt fielder Aubrey Huff. Ramirez rounded third before high-tailing it back to first ahead of a throw by Huff, but was called out because he ran inside of the second base bag on his return trip and didn't come close to touching it. The call by second base umpire Tony Randazzo was the correct one and was shown to be so by a WGN instant replay.

Next: Tom Gorzelanny (6-6, 3.51 ERA) will oppose San Francisco left-hander Barry Zito (8-6, 3.35) on Wednesday (CSN, 9:15 p.m.).

Gorzelanny, who took the loss in a 3-0 setback to Cincinnati in his last start, has been the recipient of two or fewer runs in 10 of his 16 starts this season. The Cubs failed to score in four of those contests.

Zito, who has a 2.02 ERA since the Al-Star break, allowed just two runs on four hits and struck out 10 over seven innings in his last start but did not figure in the decision.
