Rockies 6, Cubs 5

By Chris Rewers on Saturday, July 31, 2010

Hero: Derrek Lee hit a two-out three-run homer off Colorado's Rafael Betancourt to tie the game at 5. It was the 12th home run of the season for Lee who earlier in the week exercised his "Five-and-10" right to reject a trade to the Los Angeles Angels.

Goat: Tom Gorzelanny is 4-0 in six starts since rejoining the starting rotation on June 30 and hasn't lost since May 26. He was fortunate to escape with no decision on Saturday, thanks to Lee's homer. Gorzelanny allowed five runs - all earned - on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five, walked two, and served up a three-run homer to Miguel Olivo in the second inning.

Key Play: What's up with Sean Marshall? On the heels of Friday's disastrous outing, the usually reliable Marshall (6-3) gave up a leadoff game-winning homer to Carlos Gonzalez on the first pitch in the bottom of the ninth. With the home run, which reached the upper deck in right, Gonzalez completed the sixth cycle in Rockies history. It was Colorado's first cycle since Troy Tulowitzki accomplished the feat against the Cubs on Aug. 10, 2009.

Comments: The Cubs (46-58), who have lost four in a row, fell to 12 games under .500 for the first time since the Fourth of July.

Carlos Zambrano, making his first appearance since June 25, entered with one on and one out in the bottom of the seventh. He inauspiciously walked the first batter he faced, Tulowitzki, and gave up a single to Melvin Mora to load the bases. But Zambrano cleaned up his mess by striking out Seth Smith and retiring Brad Hawpe on a popout to shortstop Starlin Castro.

Next: The Cubs will try to avoid the series sweep Sunday (CSN, 2:10 p.m.) behind Carlos Silva (10-4, 3.76 ERA) while Colorado (54-50) counters with lefthander Jorge de la Rosa (3-3, 5.15). De La Rosa has lost each of his last two starts despite striking out 16 in 13 innings of work.
