Cardinals 4, Cubs 3 (11 innings)

By Chris Rewers on Sunday, July 25, 2010

Hero: Center fielder Marlon Byrd went 2-for-5 with an RBI single and also was credited with an outfield assist in the sixth when he pegged the Cardinals' Skip Schumaker at the plate when he tried to score from second on a Chris Carpenter single.

Goat: Byrd struck out looking against St. Louis reliever Ryan Franklin with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 10th.

Key Play: Felipe Lopez hit a go-ahead solo homer with two outs in the top of the 11th off Cubs rookie reliever Brian Schlitter.

Comment: Albert Pujols who led off the sixth with a homer off Ryan Dempster to tie the game at 3, has 44 home runs and 117 RBI in 151 career games against the Cubs. Pujols has 24 homers in 287 career at-bats at Wrigley Field.

Next: The Cubs (45-54) open a six-game road trip Monday (CSN, 7:05 p.m.) at Houston (40-58) as Carlos Silva (9-4, 3.86 ERA) opposes Astros left-hander Wesley Wright (0-0, 4.40).

Silva lasted just one inning in his last start (5 runs, 7 hits), last Monday against the Astros, and has failed to make it past the second in each of his last two starts.

Wright made his first career start at Wrigley Field on Tuesday and tossed four scoreless innings. Wright, however, was let down by his defense and allowed five unearned runs before being removed in the fifth inning of the Cubs' 14-7 win.
