July 2010 Archives for Agony & Ivy
Hero: Derrek Lee hit a two-out three-run homer off Colorado's Rafael Betancourt to tie the game at 5. It was the 12th home run of the season for Lee who earlier in the week exercised his "Five-and-10" right to reject a trade to the Los Angeles Angels.
It's difficult to judge a trade like the one the Cubs made ahead of Saturday's non-waiver trade deadline.
Hero: James Russell allowed one hit struck out three, and walked none in two shutout innings of relief.
In his most recent "Stat of the Week," John Dewan of Bill James Online (subscription required) decided to find out if he could statistically predict whether the "good" or "bad" version of Carlos Marmol had shown up after the Cubs closer had thrown 10 pitches.
Cubs fans are apparently finding better ways to spend their time than watching an underachieving fourth-place ballclub that is 10 games below .500.
Hero: Ryan Theriot went 3-for-4 to account for half of the Cubs' hits and scored their only run.
Hero: Ted Lilly, if he is traded later this week, had the best final two outings by a Cubs pitcher before being dealt since Steve Trout in 1987. But Lilly had nothing to show for his efforts.
Hero: Carlos Silva (10-4) rebounded after back-to-back horrible outings to reach double figures in wins for the first time since 2007 when he earned 13 victories for the Minnesota Twins. Silva allowed one (earned) run on five hits in five innings while walking one and striking out four.
