Cubs 3, Mariners 2 (13 innings)

By Chris Rewers on Thursday, June 24, 2010

Heroes: Relievers Sean Marshall, Carlos Marmol, John Grabow (1-3), Bob Howry and Tom Gorzelanny combined for five shutout innings..

Goat: After arguing a call at third base in the 10th, Lou Piniella headed to the pitcher's mound to speak with reliever Carlos Marmol but was intercepted by an alert Koyie Hill. Had Piniella made it to the mound, he would have been forced to remove Marmol because Larry Rothschild had already made a visit to the mound that inning.

Key Play: Marlon Byrd's opposite-field single in the 13th knocked in Alfonso Soriano with the go-ahead run.

Comment: The White Sox won their ninth in a row on Thursday.

Next: The Sox and Cubs renew their rivalry Friday (CSN, 3:05 p.m.) - this time at U.S. Cellular Field with Carlos Zambrano (3-5, 5.10) opposing the Sox's Jake Peavy (6-5, 5.07).
