Concession Review No. 4: Citrus Marinated Turkey Breast Sandwich
When we were on our way to a recent night game at Wrigley Field, my wife, Denise, asked if I wanted to stop somewhere for dinner.
As much as I enjoy some of the bar food at several of the Wrigleyville establishments, it was already after 6 p.m. There was not enough time for me to enjoy a pregame meal. I would feel rushed and constantly worry about missing the first pitch.
Besides, I'd rather soak up the pregame ballpark experience. There are so many things to watch even after batting practice has concluded, like the pitchers warming up and the many players who play catch, stretch, and run outfield sprints. I like watching the presentation of the lineup cards at home plate and the singing of the national anthem. It's also comforting to have my scorecard lineups filled in before the start of the game.
In the past, the tradeoff for the pregame Wrigley experience was malnutrition. As much as I enjoy a grilled Wrigley hot dog, it is a poor substitute for a plate of wings.
But thanks to another outstanding sandwich offering from the Sheffield Grill, my lack of patience for getting inside the ballpark was handsomely rewarded.
The Sheffield Grill, located in the right-field corner, features menu items like the High Plains bison burger, bison hot dog, and Caesar salad.
As I approached the counter, I noticed a carving station where a chef was slicing a giant cut of meat. My inquiring mind had to know; the chef told me it was citrus marinated turkey breast.
Game on!
The citrus marinated turkey breast sandwich included four generous slices of turkey on an onion roll topped with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. The meat covered the entire bun. It was accompanied by a generous portion of potato chips.
The sandwich was moist, flavorful, and filling. As I wiped the mayonnaise off my chin, I was certain that I could not eat another thing. But I also wish that the play on the field could be as consistently as good as the concession offerings.
The sandwich wasn't exactly cheap - $9.25 - but when you consider that a ballpark beer sets you back $6.75, it's easier to take.
The citrus marinated turkey breast sandwich is part of a rotating "Homestand Specials" menu item at the Sheffield Grill and will be offered again later in the season.
"Hometand Specials" during the next homestand (June 11-20) will include the High Plains bison meatball sandwich and chef carved barbeque spiced beef brisket.
Another thing I have noticed on each of my visits to the Sheffield Grill this season is how friendly the help behind the counter has been. They are always smiling, always informative, and always saying, "Enjoy the game!" while looking like they mean it.
The Friendly Confines, indeed.
