Chip Shot

By Chris Rewers on Sunday, June 13, 2010

It's hard to believe that it's been six years since Chip Caray was the TV voice of the Cubs.

It seems like it was only yesterday when I had to suffer through the obnoxious play-by-play accounts of an uninformed, unprepared product of nepotism who was hardly ever spontaneous and usually contrived.

I was reminded of Chip's awfulness while watching Quick Pitch on the MLB Network late Saturday night.

Highlights of Saturday's Braves-Twins game included a classic Chipism from Caray's work on SportSouth.

The Twins loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth of a 2-2 game and Braves manager Bobby Cox summoned hard-throwing rookie Jonny Venter - a native of Pikeville, Ky.

Venters struck out Minnesota's Jason Kubel swinging with a 94-mph fastball.

As Venters was shown walking off the field, an excited Chip exclaimed, "And Venters uses a little Kentucky blue gas to strike out Kubel!"

How late does Chip stay up at night coming up with stuff like that? Vin Scully, he is not.

Chip is pretty embarrassing. My favorite moment came when Score host Dan McNeil said he thought Chip just "isn't cool." The reason for that revelation? He said he thought Chip wouldn't like UFO, which is indeed an accurate litmus-test of someone's coolness.
