Angels 12, Cubs 0

By Chris Rewers on Saturday, June 19, 2010

Hero: John Grabow walked a batter, but faced the minimum four batters during his 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Goat: In a stinker of a game like this, there are so many candidates, but we'll single out Ted Lilly (2-6) who was as awful Saturday as he was spectacular in his previous start against the White Sox. Lilly dug a deep hole for the Cubs by allowing four runs in the first inning and went on to allow eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked three, struck out seven, and served up homers to Howie Kendrick and Torii Hunter.

Key Play: Juan Rivera's one-out, three-run double in the first inning broke the game open.

Comments: The Angels outhit the Cubs 15-2. Angels starter Jared Weaver struck out 11. The Cubs committed two more errors and have made 54 on the season. Washington (62) and Florida (57) are the only major league teams with more errors. The Cubs (30-38) have won just seven of their last 25 games - a .280 winning percentage.

Next: Carlos Zambrano (2-5, 5.66 ERA) will attempt to earn his first interleague victory since June 22, 2007 (against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field) when he opposes Angels left-hander Joe Saunders (5-7, 4.70). The Cubs are 8-2 this season against southpaw starters, but Saunders is 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA in six road starts.
