Stuck With Soriano

By Chris Rewers on Friday, May 7, 2010

Tell us something we didn't know.

No matter how much Alfonso Soriano pads his stats against the likes of the Nationals, Diamondbacks, and Reds, it will not help his trade marketability.

With Soriano still owed about $90 million of the $136 million in the seven-year contract he signed prior to the 2007 season, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark has declared Soriano the most untradable player in the major leagues.

Stark polled GMs and club officials this week to compile his Five Most Untradable Contracts in Baseball List.

Soriano is followed on the list by Toronto's Vernon Wells, Cleveland's Travis Hafner, Houston's Carlos Lee, and San Francisco'sBarry Zito. Honorable mention: Carlos Zambrano.

Stark's analysis of Soriano's skills are dead on:

"Doesn't run anymore. Isn't a sure bet to catch routine fly balls. Doesn't even seem to understand what all the hubbub is about. And, if all that weren't enough, he has full trade-veto power. But it doesn't sound as if he'll have to worry about exercising that power anytime soon."

"I don't know any team that would even touch him," an American League executive told Stark.

"Ay, ay, ayyyyyyy," was the response of a National League executive at the mere mention of Soriano's name.

Could that NL exec possibly have been Jim Hendry?
