Soriano Swinging For Record

By Chris Rewers on Wednesday, May 5, 2010

If he hits a home run on Wednesday at Pittsburgh, Alfonso Soriano will tie a Cubs record with home runs in five consecutive games.

During the streak, Soriano has gone 8-for-16 with five homers and 11 RBI to raise his average to .321.

According to the 2010 Chicago Cubs Media Guide, the only Cubs to homer in five straight games are:

* Hack Wilson: July 3, July 4 (DH), July 6-7, 1928
* Ryne Sandberg: Aug 7-11, 1989.
* Sammy Sosa: June 3-6, June 8, 1998

The Pirates' Dale Long, in 1956, and the Yankees' Don Mattingly, in 1987, share the major league record with homers in eight straight games.

Long also holds the distinction of being one of the few left-handed catchers in major league history - and he caught two games with the Cubs in 1958.
