Pinstripe Patrol

By Chris Rewers on Sunday, May 2, 2010

An overlooked benefit of Carlos Zambrano's assignment to the bullpen? The Cubs are wearing their hideous alternate blue softball jerseys a lot less.

Since 1998, with the exception of the entire 2007 season when then team president John McDonough temporarily retired them, the Cubs starting pitcher has usually been given the choice on whether the team will wear traditional home and away uniforms or the alternates.

Zambrano usually has chosen the alternates for his starts, but the current five men in the Cubs rotation all prefer the pinstripe top with the classic "bull's-eye" logo when they pitch at Wrigley. The Cubs sported those outfits in all seven games of their just-completed homestand.
