Get A Clue, Lou
Is Uncle Lou playing coy - as is his wont? Because if he's not, this is inexcusable.
"Ryan Theriot began the day with a .267 on-base percentage in May, and had not drawn a walk since May 1," Paul Sullivan reports (second item) for the Tribune.
"'I haven't paid too much attention to it,' Piniella said. 'Are the numbers down a little bit?'
"Piniella seemed stunned to learn of Theriot's lack of walks, calling it 'unbelievable.'
"'Really? How about that?' he said. 'He hasn't walked since the first of May? That is surprising. I wasn't aware of that.'"
Really? How about that!
Now, Lou may have been doing his best Richard M. Daley impersonation, but the evidence suggests he really didn't know how many times his leadoff hitter had walked this month. Then again, the Cubs haven't historically been interested in little things like walks, particularly when it comes to their leadoff hitters.
At least now Piniella - and Theriot - know.
"Before the first question was even uttered, Cubs second baseman Ryan Theriot said, ''You want to talk to me about having only one walk this month?'" Gordon Wittenmyer reports for the Sun-Times
'''Yeah, he just talked to me about it a little while ago,' Theriot said. ''He said, 'I'm going to make you walk home from the game tonight so you can get a walk.'"
Funny. But not so much.
