Cubs 4, Rockies 2 (11 innings)

By Chris Rewers on Monday, May 17, 2010

Hero: "He's back!" Ron Santo exclaimed.

The jury is still out on that, but Aramis Ramirez picked an opportune time for his fourth home run of the season and first since April 15, slamming a two-run walkoff shot to left-center in the bottom of the 11th on a 1-and-0 pitch from Colorado reliever Matt Belisle (1-1).

Goat: Reliever John Grabow struggled yet again, failing to protect a 2-1 lead for starter Randy Wells, Grabow (8.16 ERA) loaded the bases in the top of the eighth by allowing a single to Seth Smith, and walks to Brad Hawpe and Todd Helton. He was relieved by Carlos Marmol who forced in the tying run with a walk to Miguel Olivo.

Key Play: Marmol escaped the eighth-inning jam when Ian Stewart rolled into a 6-3 double play that was fielded flawlessly by shortstop Starlin Castro.

Comment: The stage for Ramirez's heroics was set by a dominating performance from reliever Sean Marshall (3-1), who retired all six hitters he faced in the 10th and 11th. Marshall set up his fastball with a dazzling display of curveballs and sliders, striking out four.

Next: Carlos Silva (4-0, 3.40 ERA) will try to lead the Cubs to a sweep of a brief two-game series and a 4-4 homestand when he opposes Colorado's Jhoulys Chacin (2-1, 2.66) on Tuesday (CSN, 7:05 p.m.).
