Cubs 1, Dodgers 0

By Chris Rewers on Friday, May 28, 2010

Hero: Ted Lilly did not figure in the decision, but the veteran left-hander turned in his second straight terrific start, allowing just three hits over seven shutout innings while walking three (all in the fifth) and striking out five.

Goat: Ryan Theriot went 0-for-4 and failed to reach base. The on-base percentage for the top-of-the-order Theriot, who has not drawn a walk since May 1, dropped to .320.

Key Play: After Mike Fontenot led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple, the red-hot Tyler Colvin - now hitting .309 with a slugging percentage of .603 - knocked him in with a one-out double.

Comment: Sean Marshall and Carlos Marmol are emerging as perhaps the best 1-2 bullpen punch in the major leagues. Marshall (5-1) worked a scoreless eighth to lower his ERA to 1.85 and Marmol earned his 11th save and dropped his ERA to 1.46 after striking out the side in the ninth. Marmol has walked 15 and struck out an amazing 49 in just 24 2/3 innings.

Next: The Cubs (23-25), winners of eight of their last 11, and Cardinals (27-21) meet for the first time this season Friday (WGN, 1:20 p.m.) at Wrigley Field as Randy Wells (3-2, 3.99) opposes St. Louis ace Chris Carpenter (5-1, 3.09).
