Cardinals 9, Cubs 1

By Chris Rewers on Monday, May 31, 2010

Hero: Geovany Soto's fifth home run of the season, in the seventh inning, accounted for the Cubs' only run.

Goat: Ryan Dempster allowed six runs (all earned) and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings. Dempster walked three, struck out seven, and allowed the first two of Albert Pujols' three home runs.

Key Play: The Cubs trailed 1-0 when they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright (7-3) escaped the jam when Starlin Castro tapped into a 6-4-3 double play.

Comment: Pujols became the first batter to hit three home runs in one game against the Cubs since Cincinnati's Joey Votto on May 7, 2008. Pujols has 40 home runs, 111 RBI, and is hitting .288 in 147 career games against the Cubs.

Next: Randy Wells (3-3, 4.79 ERA) will try to bounce back from disastrous outings against St. Louis in his previous start on Friday and at Pittsburgh on May 6 when he goes against the Pirates on Monday (WGN, 12:35 p.m.). Pittsburgh (20-31), which has won five of its first six against the Cubs (24-27) this season, will start right-hander Ross Ohlendorf (0-3, 5.11). Ohlendorf did not figure in the decision in the Pirates' 4-3 loss at Wrigley Field on May 16.
