Mets 6, Cubs 1

By Chris Rewers on Monday, April 19, 2010

Hero: Randy Wells. It's getting old. Wells allowed just one run and six hits over six innings, but failed to figure in the decision because of an impotent Cubs offense and an awful bullpen.

Goat: With a 1-1 score in the seventh, James Russell plunked .150 hitter Jose Reyes with an 0-2 pitch. Two batters later, former Cub Angel Pagan broke the tie with a two-run homer.

Key Play: Aramis Ramirez (now hitting just .157) stepped up to the plate in the fifth inning of a scoreless game with the bases loaded and tapped into a force-out at third.

Comment: Jeff Samardzija should start making arrangements for a return trip to Des Moines. The former Notre Dame wide receiver failed to retire a batter during New York's five-run seventh, raising his ERA to 18.90.

Next: Can Carlos Zambrano stop the bleeding? Big Z (1-1, 9.45 ERA) will try to halt the Cubs' three-game losing streak when he opposes the Mets' Mike Pelfrey (2-0, 1.29) at 6:10 p.m. (WGN).
