Sometimes Desperation Is The Correct Response

By Chris Rewers on Friday, April 23, 2010

Ken Rosenthal writes that the Cubs' move of Carlos Zambrano to the bullpen smacks of desperation.

Rosenthal wonders if Zambrano will be able to pitch on back-to-back days and also questions whether Big Z will be able to throw enough strikes in his bullpen role.

And as if we already did not know, Rosenthal said he was told by a scout that the entire right side of the Cubs' pre-Zambrano bullpen, with the exception of Carlos Marmol, belonged in the minors.

Rosenthal theorizes that the best solution to the North Siders' pitching problems would be to trade Tom Gorzelanny for an established right-handed set-up man.

Is it desperation or making the best of the hand he's been dealt?

I still believe that Lou Piniella made the right move. I like that he was willing to think outside of the box. Ryan Dempster, Randy Wells, and Carlos Silvaare all pitching better than Big Z.

Uncle Lou's roll of the dice is a wise gamble.
