Don't Let Kelly Johnson Beat You

By Beachwood Reporter on Thursday, April 29, 2010

Sure the Diamondbacks' Chris Young is 5-for-12 (.417) against today's scheduled Cubs starter Ted Lilly, and Adam LaRoche is 6-for-13 (.400). The real threat, though, may be a lil' ol' second baseman who happens to be the league's leading home-run hitter so far this season.

Meet Kelly Johnson, who's hitting a dinger every 8.75 at-bats.

Last night it was Johnson's 10th-inning blast that lifted the Diamondbacks over the Rockies (giving former Cub Bob Howry the win).

"You have to expect a fastball at some point," Johnson said. "I had a pretty good hunch about a fastball, looked for it in the right spot and it was there."

Johnson is hardly the only long-ball threat the Cubs will have to contend with in this series, though. Arizona leads the NL with 29 home runs, though only eight have come on the road.

The Cubs, meanwhile, are fifth in the NL with 23 home runs - but only eight at home. (Derrek Lee is the team leader with four.)
