Cubs 11, Diamondbacks 5

By Chris Rewers on Friday, April 30, 2010

Hero: Alfonso Soriano (2-for-3, HR, 2B, 4 RBI) hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning off Arizona starter Rodrigo Lopez (1-1) that put the Cubs ahead to stay.

Goat: Lou Piniella said before Friday's game that he wants the Cubs to start playing with a greater sense of urgency, but he needs to start managing with such a sense. Piniella once again started slumping Aramis Ramirez in the cleanup spot and Ramirez managed only a single in four at-bats. The Cubs third baseman finished an April to forget with a .152 batting average.

Key Plays: The stage was set in the sixth when the sizzling tandem of Ryan Theriot and Kosuke Fukudome opened the bottom of the frame with back-to-back singles. Theriot, now hittng .337, has hit safely in 10 straight games and is 22-for-47 (.468 average) during the streak. Fukudome - now hitting .344 - went 2-for-3, scored three runs, and hit his third home run in six games.

Comment: The bullpen picked up a starter for a change and helped Randy Wells improve to 3-0. Wells (6 IP, 5 R, 8 H, 0 BB, 8 SO) was victimized in part by an 18 MPH gust that was blowing straight out to left. But John Grabow, in his best outing of the season, struck out two while setting Arizona down in order in the seventh. Carlos Zambrano and Carlos Marmol also each turned in a shutout inning of relief.

Next: The Cubs will try to make it two in a row Saturday (12:05 p.m., WGN) when they send Carlos Silva (2-0, 1.73 ERA) against Arizona's Dan Haren (3-1, 4.50).
